There are three levels of LPI Certification (LPIC):
- Level 1
- Level 2
- Level 3
All current LPI exams use computer-based tests administered through VUE. Each exam costs $100 (US dollars) and
the current outline is for there to be two exams at each level.
- LPIC Level 1
Suitable tasks:
- can work at the Unix command line
- performs easy maintenance tasks: help out users, add users to a larger
system, backup & restore, shutdown & reboot
- can install and configure a work station (incl. X) and connect it to the
LAN, or a stand-alone PC via modem to the Internet.
Note:
- This is somewhat heavier than the SAGE "Novice" level: we aim beyond the
power-user & helpdesk level. It is about at the "prerequisites" level of the
RedHat training program.
Requirements:To complete Level 1, candidates must complete two exams:
- The 101 (formerly T1a) exam
- The 102 (formerly T1b) exam
Note that as of February 2000, the requirement for the
distribution-specific "T2" exams was removed.

- The 202 (formerly T4) exam
Exams:
Note that this level of certification is currently under active
development and the tasks listed below may or may not be part of the final
version of the exams. They are provided here as an example of the type of things
that may be on the exams as they are currently envisioned.

- write shell scripts with `sh` and `sed`
- thorough understanding of (Inter)networking
202 (formerly T4). Linux optimization

- LPIC Level 3
Suitable tasks:

Possbile examples include:
During 2001, we will be doing research to determine exactly which exams
will be part of LPI Level 3. The following titles are examples of the type of
exams we expect to offer. This page will be updated as this level starts to be
developed.
- 321: Windows Integration (working together with NT-server, many
Win'9x clients)
- 322: Internet Server (listservers, newsserver, FTP, HTTP; DNS, ISP,
NFS; maybe perl scripting)
- 323: Database Server
- 324: Security, Firewalls, Encryption
- 325: Kernel Internals & Device drivers (probably know C);
